One of the major weaknesses we have as human beings is forgetting. Problems and challenges have a way of overwhelming us, and blinding us of how we overcame similar ones in the past. It’s always easy for us to forget how we survived difficult situations in the past and lived to tell the story. We approach problems from the angle of, “could this be the one that will finish me off”, and thus forget how God saved and sustained us before. God through the Holy Scriptures keeps on reminding us never to forget. Many times He urged people to have symbols that will remind them how God saves them from similar challenges in the past. God asked Jacob to travel back memory lane and remember how he anointed a stone in fear when fleeing from his brother Esau. That was a moment when Jacob was down with nothing and anointed a stone that he had used as a pillow in Bethel. Jacob had moved on with life and was settled with his family and like many of us, forgotten the place where encounter God. Remembering how God came through for us in previous challenges always give us some impetus to move ahead with courage. Remembering the low that God picked us from has a way of energizing us to face uncertain future. What challenges could you be facing today? What could God be asking you to remember that He did for you and you have already forgotten? What accident, relationship challenge, joblessness or danger has God ever rescued you from and is asking you to remember? God did not bring you this far to shame you! He wants you to remember your times together in the past and build confidence to face the journey ahead! Yes, let’s travel back memory lane today!
“Then God said to Jacob, “Arise, go up to Bethel and dwell there; and make an altar there to God, who appeared to you when you fled from the face of Esau your brother.” Genesis 35:1 NKJV
