Human beings are creatures of habit with predictable responses. We have the habit of acting in a similar way in the face of danger. We almost react the same way when we feel threatened. No wonder investment experts advise people to counter these natural trends by investing when everybody else is scared and selling off when everybody is greedy. Quite often in the paths of life, you will reach that point where you have to make a hard decision that goes against popular belief or one that counters the currents. The scriptural story of Isaac is a good learning point. The land of Canaan used to face perennial famines that had seen his father follow the masses to go down to Egypt every time there was famine. When Isaac tried to follow the pattern, God asked him to act against the flow. God asked him to plant in the face of famine. Isaac planted when everybody expected him to save and move away from disaster. He invested when it was unlikely to do so and trusted the God of the harvest. We are going through a period of uncertainty with Corona virus pandemic when the prevailing philosophy is to hold the little we have so that it can last us for long. Faith demands that we give what we cannot keep to receive what we can keep. God is asking us to identify opportunities of sowing amidst the uncertainty. This could be the time to try your business idea, write that book you’ve been wanting to write or get started in that venture you’ve been wanting to launch. After all the best time to invest is when everybody else is scared. God is also asking us to identify opportunities where we can invest in the lives of others. This is a season to think beyond ourselves and think of others who are in worse off situations. Harvest are not depended on seasons but on the God of the harvest. Where is God asking you to sow by faith? Where is God asking you to make an unpopular move during this season? Where can you trust God for an idea that you’ve always wanted to implement? It might appear unpopular but not so with God. Like Isaac, God’s people take a step of faith and thrive during seasons of famine!
“Isaac planted crops in that land and the same year reaped a hundredfold, because the Lord blessed him.” Genesis 26:12 NIV
