One of the most difficult things these days is to have people who keep and honor their word to the last details. People are quick to promise something and especially when things are going well but quick to retract when the circumstances change. There are so many things that can hinder us from keeping our word largely because we are limited and vulnerable to changing environments. This is one thing that makes God different. God made a promise to Abraham that appeared quick distant and difficult to fulfill. He promised to give him the land of Canaan with his descendants at a time when he did not even have a child. The Scriptures calls Abraham righteous because against all prevailing odds he believed God. He counted his faithful to keep his word even when he would be dead. He lived in the land of the promise as an alien even struggling to buy burial sites yet knowing God will eventually give him the land. How often do we struggle on something that rightfully belongs to us and we have to keep believing that when the time is right, God will give it to us. Abraham died and so did his son Isaac and grandson Jacob and the promise still appeared distant if not impossible. They never physically got to receive the promise but embraced it by faith. What can you lay hold of by faith even if it physically appears distant. Abraham knew God’s promises were greater than him. It took many generations later and Joshua one day testified that none of God’s promises had failed. It all came to pass. What has God promised you and you wonder whether they will ever come to pass? Where is time against you and you wonder if God will still keep His word? Abraham believed not necessarily for his sake but for the sake of his descendants. He knew he may not be there for a thousand generations but still believed. It does not matter how long it takes, one day one time, God will keep his word to the last detail. Our work is to trust him that He means what He said and not keep wondering how He will do it!
“So the Lord gave Israel all the land he had sworn to give their ancestors, and they took possession of it and settled there. The Lord gave them rest on every side, just as he had sworn to their ancestors. Not one of their enemies withstood them; the Lord gave all their enemies into their hands. Not one of all the Lord’s good promises to Israel failed; every one was fulfilled.”Joshua 21:43-45 NIV
