We are living at a time when it has become difficult for people to take a break from work as they employ every opportunity available to make money. The trend of employees forfeiting leave days in exchange for monetary compensation is on the rise as many commit to more than one jobs to increase their bottom line. Whereas it’s good to work hard and seek increased income, the scriptures makes it clear that God demands rest of us. The command to rest is amongst the first that God gave man reminding him that the world would still function without his everyday input. The Creator of the universe created man on the 6th day making sure that his first day on earth was spent resting. God is sovereign over creation and despite the fact that man want to be involved, he understands our limitations and commanded periods of rest. It’s good to hustle and look for daily bread but rest breaks the cycle of self dependence and reliance showing that it is God who is responsible for daily supply and provisions. Where are you tempted to overwork yourself without rest? Where could your failure to take a break be a sign of mistrusting God’s ability to take care of you? Where could your life be more enjoyable and satisfying if you faithfully rested and trusted God? God demands rest irrespective of the much we think is there for us to do and accomplish. Every night we go to sleep is a reminder that the world does not stop when we take a break. Perhaps the main reason why God forced Adam to sleep as He created the wife is to remind us that God works best when we are resting. Do whatever you may and whether you finish it or not, take a rest for God is in control!
“Do not wear yourself out to get rich; do not trust your own cleverness. Cast but a glance at riches, and they are gone, for they will surely sprout wings and fly off to the sky like an eagle.” Proverbs 23:4-5 NIV
